What is a MSG file?
MSG is the file format Microsoft Outlook uses to save a single email, contact, or calendar item. It stores the header (sender, recipient, subject, timestamp), the message body, and any original attachments in one file — which is why it can typically only be opened natively in Outlook.

How the Gmail route works
Gmail's import path speaks standard MIME, which is exactly what EML is — so the whole job is one conversion plus an upload. Convert the .msg to EML above, then in Gmail on the web open a message list and drag the .eml file in, or use a desktop client connected over IMAP (Thunderbird or Apple Mail) and drag the message into the Gmail folder — it syncs up to your account with the original date, sender and attachments intact. Because the conversion happens locally, nothing about the message passes through us on its way to Google.
