What is a MSG file?
MSG is the file format Microsoft Outlook uses to save a single email, contact, or calendar item. It stores the header (sender, recipient, subject, timestamp), the message body, and any original attachments in one file — which is why it can typically only be opened natively in Outlook.

What is an RTF file?
RTF (Rich Text Format) is a plain-text markup for styled documents that Microsoft designed as a universal interchange format. Every word processor built in the last thirty years reads it — including WordPad, ancient Word versions, LibreOffice and the document viewers embedded in legacy line-of-business systems. It carries bold, italics, paragraph structure and Unicode text, but no scripting and no embedded binaries, which is exactly why locked-down environments still accept RTF when they reject DOCX.
